Value-priced Grill Brushes

We were intrigued by the all-wood model. It was shaped like a paddle with a straight edge on one end that you repeatedly run over the hot grill grate, burning indentations into the wood and eventually creating grooves that will scrape off debris. But after spending 10 minutes hovering over a hot charcoal grill, pushing the paddle across the grate, we saw only faint indentations in the paddle.

When we used a new paddle on the gas grill, we were able to achieve deeper indentations because the grill and grate were heavier and sturdier and we could apply more pressure. It was a lot of work, though, and because the paddle's indentations and grooves were rigid, we couldn't clean the grates as thoroughly as we could when using a brush made with bristles or other more flexible materials.

The model that featured a steel-wool pad attached to a plastic brush head was effective at scrubbing the tops of grates, but we couldn't clean between the grill grate bars because of the plastic brush head.

We tried to minimize contact between the hot grates and the plastic because we feared that the plastic might melt.

The brush with metal coils was easier to use than the steel-wool model, but it still required some effort—even after we dipped it in water, as instructed, to create steam.

The coils were rigid and r read more. We stand behind our winners so much that we even put our seal of approval on them. Miye is a senior editor for ATK Reviews.

See Everything We Tested. Bristle-Free Models Posed Some Challenges We were intrigued by the all-wood model. Cook's Country The Best Grill Brushes Watch Now. Everything We Tested Expand All. Instead, you're hunched over a hot grill, scraping off char and food residue before you get cooking.

But the actual grill scraper you use can make a big difference here. The best products will do the job better and more importantly quicker. That way, you've got more time to hang around on your outdoor sofa or sectional. But what exactly makes any one grill scraper better than another?

Firstly, it's down to the actual brush design. Bristles, specifically wire bristles, are going to do the best job, but if you wear the brush out too much, those bristles can fall off and get in your food. Secondly, the best brushes will have an alternate side with a flat scraper, which lets you really push off stubborn grime.

And lastly, you probably want something with a handle that keeps you away from the heat, since you'll be cleaning the grill grates while they're hot. We considered it all, and tried out some of the best grill cleaning brushes and scrapers on the market.

These are the ones that stood out, and they're the seven best grill cleaning brushes for you to spend your money on. This is everything you want in a grill brush. The three rows of wire get all the way around every grate.

This is the shape we would recommend for any grill cleaning brush you're going to get. On top of that, the scraper helps you scrub off any caked on grime, and the inch handle keeps you far away from the flame.

The only downside is for those that want to avoid metal bristles. If you're especially worried about metal bristles getting stuck on your grill and food honestly, not a real concern these bristles are stainless steel.

If you are worried about metal bristles though, Grillbadger makes a great natural alternative. The exact material of the bristles isn't disclosed, but they feel like some sort of wood derivative, like a much tougher boar-bristle brush.

They can handle scraping hot grates, but if any bristles fall out, they'll just burn up at cooking heat. The natural bristles obviously aren't as strong as metal options, but there's very little between the two.

That, plus the scraper and nice wooden handle make this far-and-away the best natural option. And back to the metal options. This is almost an exact replicaof the Grillart we awarded Best Overall, minus the scraper.

The bristles are comprable, but there's no scraper to work on anything that's really stuck on. But for that reason, it comes in at half the retail price. It's a great budget option.

If you're worried about protecting your actual grill grates, but still want the performance of a wire brush, we really like this brass wire option. It has the three row build that we love on a grill brush. But, the brass bristles are safer on more delicate materials like porcelain or ceramic. And as a bonus, we really love the wooden handle on this scraper.

If you prefer something refillable, Grill Rescue makes this sponge-like option. Instead of really scraping off grime and residue, you dunk this brush in water and scrape against a hot grill. The resulting evaporation is what really loosens grime, and the brush pushes it off.

For a seriously budget option, you can just get a handheld scraping stone. It won't keep your hands away from the heat, but as far as doing the job asked of it, it's as good as anything else on this list.

If you want something totally natural, a wood scraper is the way to go. And within that category, we prefer Cuisinart's scraper. The main reason is the leverage it allows. Without bristles or any sort of evaporation, you need force to loosen up the grill particles, and the two handles on this scraper really allow for that.

Lastly, after all this, the brushes needed to be cleaned of gunk. In the end, the Grillaholics Pro Brass Grill Brush won its place as the best overall pick thanks to the durability of its brass bristles. After all this testing, here are the best grilling brushes for a successful BBQ season.

What We Love: Non-shedding, risk-free purchase, little force required. What We Don't Love: No warranty, not dishwasher-safe. Stainless brass is both heavy-duty and not prone to shedding bristles, meaning this brush can be used regularly without fear.

I found during testing that the brass bristles are durable and great for most surfaces. One downside is that it cannot be placed in the dishwasher, and some gunk did get trapped between the bristles. After the tests, I ran it under hot water for several seconds which helped to alleviate that.

The inch handle is ideal for leverage, and the design is meant to amplify cleaning. Strength and utility are combined in this all-around excellent outdoor grill brush. Length: 18 inches Bristle Material: Brass Dishwasher Safe: No.

What We Love: Inexpensive, can be used on different surfaces, 5-year warranty. What We Don't Love: Stainless steel bristles can be tough to clean, loses some bristles with force.

This three-brushes-in-one brush exerts extra force while you use it, cleaning not only the top surface but also the spaces between grates. At 18 inches, this tool is the ideal length for maximizing the strength from your hand with minimal effort and yet be far enough away from any rising heat.

That is, for taller people. I'm shorter than average height and had to stand on the edge of my feet to reach the other side of my grill during testing. During those tests, this brush does shed some bristles without a lot of force.

But it comes clean easily under running water and is durable enough to stand the test of time. Length: 18 inches Bristle Material: Stainless steel Dishwasher Safe: Yes. What We Love: Rustproof, 2-year warranty. What We Don't Love: Bamboo can absorb water and rot, no angle. For the money, this metal-bristled brush does do the trick, with the help of a scraper at the tip of the brush, for really stubborn food.

Instead, running it through hot water for a few seconds did help get it clean. A lack of angled head means that it can be hot and awkward to reach the back of the grill, an issue I ran into on the deep-cleaning test.

But there are other bonuses to this brush, like a loop to hang it and the scraper at the tip. Weber also offers a 2-year warranty should anything go wrong.

That, plus the ability to work on chrome, porcelain enamel, cast iron, and stainless steel grates, makes this straightforward brush an excellent choice for a budget option. Length: 18 inches Bristle Material: Stainless steel Dishwasher Safe: No. Related: The Best Propane Grills. What We Love: Has attached scraper, protects against scratches.

What We Don't Love: Not dishwasher-safe. Not only is this sturdy grill brush bristle-free, but it also has an attached scraper, perfect for attacking the sticky bits on your grill grates.

Helix coils protect grill grates against scratches and the three-in-one design is ideal for getting at really tough messes. An inch reinforced non-slip handle is the ideal length for leverage. This brush is gentle enough to be used on porcelain, ceramic, iron, and steel grates.

Length: 18 inches Bristle Material: Woven wire Dishwasher Safe: No. Related: The Best Grills. What We Love: Ergonomically designed, comes with water tank.

What We Don't Love: Not dishwasher-safe, somewhat uncomfortable angle. The spray expels a fine mist that turns to steam on a hot grill, helping to break down any leftover debris.

The stainless-stee brush is three-sided, can reach into hard-to-clean areas, and is suitable for charcoal and gas grills. The spray trigger is thumb-activated and the handle is ergonomically designed for comfort, plus the attached water tank makes it easy to fill the spray container. The arm on this grill brush is longer than most of the other ones I tested, meaning I could easily reach the back of the grill for the deep cleaning test.

But after spending 10 minutes hovering over a hot charcoal grill, pushing the paddle across the grate, we saw only faint indentations in the paddle. Grill brushes are typically…brushes. They have bristles made of wire or nylon that dig in and pry gunk loose from a grill. The Grill Rescue is something else. It looks a sponge and feels like something you might squeeze to build up your grip strength.

The head of the Grill Rescue is made of aramid fibers, the same stuff used in lots of firefighting gear. Besides the ease that steam cleaning offers, the company says the other big advantage of the Grill Rescue is that it is a brush without bristles.

My colleague Emily Farris covered the dangers of using wire bristles in , and this eliminates those risks entirely. Give the head a nice long dunk in a bowl of water it really needs to be soaked in order to work and then push it over the grate.

After using a variety of brushes, I think the Grill Rescue is a better bet for standard grill upkeep. It can also be cleaned because the head pops off the handle and can go in the dishwasher.

That was not my experience—once it got dirty it never stopped being at least a light shade of charcoal—but it did clean up more easily than the stiff nylon brush I used alongside it.
