Economical cooking essentials

We've learned from testing hundreds of kitchen tools and appliances that sometimes there's no way around it—the best kitchen appliances are the more expensive kitchen appliances. In some cases, as with the KitchenAid stand mixer and All-Clad pans , the top-of-the-line option can't be beat in terms of quality or performance.

BUT—and this is a big, fat but—that isn't always the case. For most top-dollar tools out there, we have also found a trove of excellent, affordable kitchen tools that we use over and over. The Presto Flipside waffle maker has quite a few features that win over its fancy All-Clad competitor.

And we could talk your ear off about the virtues of the economical OXO balloon whisk. To save you the work of combing through our lengthy compendium of product tests, we compiled a list of our favorite affordable kitchen tools; each of these was tested by our editors, and could easily hold a candle to any more expensive competitors.

On the other hand, definitely invest in a stainless steel pan because those can last decades. I made the mistake of picking up my first set of pans from Ikea.

Since I cook a lot, they only lasted six months. Make sure to get three of each in different sizes for your different needs—think, small, medium, and large.

Product links for my favorite pots and pans for your kitchen equipment list:. Food processors are very versatile. Forget the ice cream maker, seriously. I have an adorable one like this that holds three cups. The Magic Bullet worked for me for a few years, until I started blending soups.

Then it was useless, which is why I recommend getting one that allows steam to escape without any mess. At the end of the day, you just need something that will let you make everything from soup to sauce to pancake batter, and beyond, like the Ninja blender I have pictured below!

Personally, I only use measuring cups and spoons when following a recipe—a rare occurrence in my kitchen. I made the mistake of buying two plastic cutting boards at Ikea that only lasted a year. No joke—they broke in half. For your kitchen, I recommend plastic and bamboo cutting boards of different sizes!

This kitchen equipment list would be incomplete without food storage containers. Whatever your preference, whether glass or plastic, there are plenty of high-quality options out there to choose from. While a microwave may make the process of reheating leftovers super fast and simple, you can also totally do it with a pan and a stovetop, or a baking sheet and your oven.

My friend had a food dehydrator in college and it took up so much space she had to leave it on the floor. And there are plenty of great no-churn ice cream recipes that rely on food processors and blenders to get the job done instead.

Instead, I keep a small hand mixer at my place for all of my baking needs. These are totally useless. We can make popcorn in a pot on the stove super easily! No fancy equipment needed.

And maybe consider checking out our simple AF recipes! True story: my grandpa got my grandma a juicer and it was the biggest waste of time. We all concluded it was better to just buy juices from the store! When it comes to novelty kitchen equipment, do your best to resist the temptation.

I can't just leave dirty dishes in the sink after I'm done cooking and sometimes the hardest part of washing dishes is getting the motivation to do so. I counter that by splurging on cleaning items that help convince me to wash dishes, such as Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Dish Soap , which is expensive for dish soap but every scent I've come across smells amazing, and a Scrub Daddy Sponge , the happiest bright-yellow super sponge that cheers me up as I scrub burnt food off my pans.

Wooden spoons like these are a much better alternative. They won't scratch your pots and pans and you won't risk burning yourself. Make sure not to put them in the dishwasher though because the wood will warp. Yes, I did learn that the hard way. Imagine trying to flip things over in a hot pan with a fork and a knife.

It's more difficult than you might think, which is why this thin, flexible spatula is an extremely helpful kitchen tool to have around. Despite it being called a "fish" spatula, it flips anything and everything with ease — pancakes, fried potato latkes, cookies — you name it.

Measuring spoons are used to precisely measure smaller amounts of liquid or solid cooking ingredients than measuring cups. This set of 5 stainless steel measuring spoons from Prepworks contains measurements of ¼ tsp all the way up to 1 tbsp.

After testing different measuring spoons, we settled on this set ourselves and use them in our kitchen every single day. Highly recommended! For mixing together salad dressings, spice rubs, marinades, sauces, and even for storing leftovers, a set of high-quality mixing bowls is a must.

Plus, these bowls stack easily for simple storage. For draining pasta or washing vegetables and salad greens, a colander is an essential piece for your minimalist kitchen.

No multi-tasking here, but this is a high quality peeler that will stand the test of time. Although a potato masher is a great tool, it usually has a very inconvenient and bulky shape that makes closing your drawer difficult.

We chose this flip potato masher from Prepara for a few important reasons. Third, it has only 5 star reviews on Amazon and is very highly recommended. This 9-inch whisk from OXO Good Grips fits great in the hand and is perfect for whisking together salad dressings, sauces, eggs, desserts, and much more.

A salad spinner is your best friend when it comes to having a crisp salad. Made by OXO Good Grips, this salad spinner can be used by simply pressing the button on the top. We especially love this salad spinner because the strainer basket can be used for draining pasta and the bowl for serving.

So what does this mean, exactly? It meals choosing multi-purpose tools and avoiding single-purpose tools whenever possible. Instead of purchasing different types of graters, a zester, and a chiffonade, why not choose one tool that can do it all? This 7-in-1 box grater from Cuisipro can grate citrus, fine, coarse, ultra-coarse, parmesan, shave, slice and even has a ginger grater.

For cutting up a whole chicken and other meats, to vegetables, to stripping herbs, to even cutting the stems off of flowers, these kitchen and herb shears from OXO Good Grips are fantastic.

We still have this garlic press from Kuhn Rikon but use it less than we used to. Basically, a garlic press is nice to have and does make crushing garlic easier.

A paring knife is a kitchen knife with a short blade that can be used for a multitude of tasks. You can peel and chop with it, and the small tip is great for fine work like coring strawberries or similar. This workhorse of a knife deserves a spot in your kitchen.

For a much cheaper alternative, the Victorinox 4 inch paring knife is a great buy. A bread knife is a serrated knife that is typically used for wait for it slicing bread. A high quality bread knife can also be used for slicing delicate items like cakes or pastry's. A cheaper, yet high quality alternative that we use most frequently in our home , is the Victorinox Contrary to popular belief, most honing rods don't actually sharpen your blade.

Because this honing rod is made of hard ceramic, however, it is capable of both sharpening and honing your knives. It works especially well with our recommended chef's knife pick the Global G2 , because Global knives are made of harder steel than their German counterparts.

You can still purchase a sharpener shown below , but this ceramic honing rod is all that we use to maintain our Global knives, and it works like a charm.

What more could you want? A stainless steel skillet will likely be the workhorse of your kitchen. You will be using this cookware for frying, searing, sautéing, and browning, among other functions.

Plus, it comes at a fantastic price for the quality. Highly recommended. Highly, highly recommended. A saute pan is different from a skillet in a couple of important ways. This makes it easier to cook sauces and sear and braise meat than a skillet.

Just like the other All Clad picks in this article, we chose this pan because of its high quality construction, fantastic reviews, and made in USA quality guarantee.
