The free outdoor gear library in Cortez, sponsored by Great Outdoors Colorado, Montezuma Inspire Coalition and the School Community Youth Collaborative, has a new website that makes borrowing outdoor equipment easier than ever.

The gear lending library was started in to lend outdoor equipment to organizations, individuals and families who might not be able to afford or have access to gear.

The library makes it much easier for parents to take their children on outdoor adventure trips. The sponsors of the Cortez library saw the need for gear, and knowing that the lack of proper gear can keep people from participating in outdoor activities, they set out to ensure the equipment was readily available.

Christine Brice-Nelson, director of School Community Youth Collaborative, says the library is a sustainable way to enjoy Colorado outdoors. The library also allows users to try out activities such as mountain biking or paddleboarding before investing in their own equipment.

They also hope youths will help run the library. For the past several years, Iinanibaa Cordova has been the young person actively involved in helping with the library and rentals.

The website allows people to view and reserve gear. Because the gear is first-come, first-serve and is available in limited supplies, it should be ordered at least 24 hours in advance. A liability form is required prior to pick up. The equipment is purchased through funding from Great Outdoors Colorado and is available to all in the community.

As of August , the library has served people for the year. Next year, the goal is to serve at least The pickup location for gear is north of the Cortez Recreation Center, by the tennis courts.

Contacting us regarding renewals is important so that we can ensure gear is available for large groups and other reservations as needed. At this time we are not requiring ID or proof of address. We ask that you join us for a 15 minute orientation that will cover everything you need to know about using the gear library.

We ask that you do certain cleaning tasks before returning items. Staff will make this clear when you pickup your items. Staff check items after drop off to make sure they are cleaned and still working properly before the next person comes to pickup. Every situation is different, and we will never charge fees for malfunctions or wear and tear.

We know that life gets crazy! Even if you cannot pay a fee, please bring items back and talk to us about what happened. Every issue can be resolved through open communication. If Gear Library members want to borrow camping equipment, they must join our camping program by taking one of our Camping Certification Courses.

During a certification course you will learn by doing - setting up your own tent, lighting a camp stove, and hearing tons of tricks and tips from GR Outside staff.

Our camping program is finished taking new members for the season. Please check back in the Spring of for more camping program openings. Current camping members are welcome to continue placing camping gear reservations. GR Outside believes that camping is one of the most impactful things a person can do outside.

We also know that camping has historically been exclusive to those with the right combination of money, gear, skills, and a surrounding community. If you have never had the opportunity to camp before, we want you to join our camping community!

However, you will need to line up early, I am talking like 5am or earlier for these salse. People go crazy for them! Trade outdoor equipment or borrow it from friends and family members until you can get your own.

Maybe you have a family member or friend that has equipment that they no longer use and maybe you do too. See if it would be possible to make a gear swap that benefits both of you. Alternatively, if you have a friend or family member that is an outdoor enthusiast they may be willing to let you borrow outdoor equipment, just make sure that you return it in good condition.

And once you get all your own gear I encourage you to pass on the favor and allow others to borrow and test out your gear when they are new!

GearTrade is an online marketplace of used and discounted outdoor gear where the gear is sold by the owner. You can find bicycles, tents, rafts, and all kinds of great outdoor gear on this website at great prices. This is also a wonderful place for you to sell any gear that you no longer use.

Facebook Marketplace, and the many buy, sell, trade, and outdoor groups that you will find there are excellent places to look for gently used outdoor gear at discounted prices.

Camp Saver is an online outdoor gear store that sells both big, and smaller brand name outdoor gear. Camp Saver is a great place to look for all kinds of outdoor gear from sleeping bags, hiking gear, kayaks, and more. For even better deals on your outdoor gear check out the Camp Saver Outlet.

Outdoor Gear Exchange is a great place to find new and lightly used gear online for very reasonable prices. They have outdoor gear and clothing for all sizes and sports. When your items sell you can either opt for cash or a check or store credit that you can use for even more outdoor gear.

MooseJaw is an online outdoor gear retailer, owned by Walmart as its parent company. They offer a great selection of all types of outdoor clothing, shoes, and gear. Not only do they have amazing gear, and they also have a rebate program that allows you to earn store credit for every dollar that you spend, which means you can get even more gear!

Outdoor Play started out as an online retailer of kayaks and kayaking gear but has since expanded its inventory to cover a wide range of outdoor gear, clothing, and equipment. In addition to their expansive inventory, they also have a large sale section, in addition to offering great promotions all year long.

Not going to lie, Patagonia, is probably one of my more favorite outdoor clothing brands. However, I struggle with how expensive their cute clothes are.

There is a solution and it is called Worn Wear. This pink sweater I am wearing in the photo above is from this website! You can actually trade in your used Patagonia gear and they will give you a credit for your next purchase.

Patagonia then either resells the piece that you traded in or re-purposes it into unique Patagonia wear. When buying discounted outdoor gear from resale websites or personal people selling their gear there are a few things you should do to keep yourself safe.

If meeting up with someone in person make sure it is in a public place and bring a friend with you. Make sure the item is in good condition prior to purchasing as these are used gear items. I personally love finding a good deal and one way I am able to afford certain items is by purchasing them in the off-season.

Most big stores, like REI, will also have an end-of-the-season sale, so keep an eye out for these as you can find some gems.

Another practical way to get discounted gear would be to purchase around major holidays. Again, stores like REI will tend to have Labor Day or Black Friday sales.
