Mary Ellen. The Working Home Keeper , So true. He was happy to. Jens , Great score on the organic bananas!

I so missed my local veggies last winter! html Once I asked how Menards could afford to do this. And I heard an interesting story: Mr Menard owns a race car. Getting canned tomatoes for 4-cents a can after coupons — Sharon and I each bought about 4 flats worth! And then there was the time we got cake mixes and frosting for pennies. DH built me extra shelves in the basement.

Good times. Those were some dazzling deals. Then we moved across the country to a small town. There are other quality-of-life issues that compensate. Superb thrift store! Good work environment!! But the grocery situation in our one local store … limp cucumbers … strawberries that mold overnight … EXPENSIVE blueberries.

No double coupons. So, we learn to adjust. But I get great meat markdowns. And, occasionally, a loss leader to pack my shelves. Thanks, Jen. Keep up the inspirational posts. catalina and loss leader. Very practical and helpful! Great post! I stockpile and have my price points, too. It works so well!!! It nearly kills me if I have to pay full price for something, so I always try to have the necessisties on hand.

It is a program taught in our church in an effort to be self-reliant, which includes using your resources wisely. I love learning about it and doing it right. Great post and now seems to be a really low price on cereal. It should be going up really soon as wheat crops have failed around the world.

I will be getting out there. Thank you for the wonderful post. I was wondering, is there any way to find out the upcoming Catalina promotions?

Also, are they the same across the country for the stores that have Catalina promotions? In Canada, we have coupons, but generally for things like body wash and razors.

A few stores leave their markdowns in their original location rather than grouping them together, but most will create a markdown area. If necessary ask the department managers where to find the markdowns.

They would much rather sell the items than have to discard them. Make a habit of checking for manager markdowns.

Also finding when your store typically marks things down is also a great tactic. I found in college that the local grocery store had the best finds Friday mornings I went about 8 AM.

Many stores have a time that is best to shop for markdowns — finding that time can be great ;. And I would add, check with the fish monger to ask about trimmings from wild salmon.

I have found some stores no longer do their own trimming, but some still do and you can buy the trimmings at a fraction of the reg price, which work great for soups and stocks. It is very common for supermarkets to mark down products that are close to their use-by date.

Customers see these yellow labels and may even change their dinner plans simply to take advantage of this great bargain - but does it pay off for supermarkets? Something is better than nothing, many would argue.

However, this may not be entirely true. The premise for using markdowns of products close to expiry is that someone will consume more than they originally would have with no markdown.

The premise is that someone sees the yellow label and decides to buy more meat than he otherwise would - but this is rarely the case. The products that are usually marked down are perishable products such as meat and dairy.

In the bread aisle, you see two loaves identically wrapped; both are perfectly edible, but one is a day older and costs half the price.

In the produce section, you see two baskets of avocados. The ones in the front are ripe, will need to be eaten today, and cost 75 cents less than those in the back, which will last for a few days.

Which do you choose? This is a business practice called dynamic pricing, and it may be coming soon to a supermarket near you. Dynamic pricing is not new; for decades, the airline, fashion, and hospitality industries have all found that dynamic pricing — the incremental adjustments to prices to reflect inventory, demand, and supply — has helped companies cut waste and save money.

In , American Airlines saw that the proportion of empty seats on its planes fell from 15 percent to 3 percent when it made slight adjustments to ticket prices closer to when flights departed. In the s, Marriott Hotels found that it could sell out rooms on less popular days of the week using strategic pricing that varied with the length of stay and time of year.

Can this strategy also work at grocery stores, where an estimated billion pounds of food gets wasted each year? A recent study from U. The price is changing throughout the [time] horizon. The study zeros in on the question: What does more to stop food from being wasted from grocery stores — food waste diversion systems or smart pricing strategies?

The results point to the fact that stopping waste at the source is more effective — environmentally and economically. The study found that dynamic pricing could reduce food waste from grocery retailers by 21 percent.

Meanwhile, roughly 25 percent of adults reported food insecurity in All of this food waste — 35 percent of the U. Across the country, states have begun to implement strategies to divert food waste from their landfills.

These products are ones that are consumed very frequently, and are indeed considered necessity-products. Learn Your Store's Markdown Schedules. It pays to find out exactly when your grocer marks down meat and other perishables as they near their "sell by" date.

For example, I discovered that at my local supermarket, meats are marked down for the weekend first thing on Saturday morning, as soon as the store opens.

But at the same store, baked goods are generally marked "day old" and the price is reduced when the in-store bakery closes at around 5 p.

At other times, these items will have large, colorful stickers on them, boasting a discounted price. When looking to pay less for food, begin by perusing the markdown shelves at your local grocer. You need to know where to look. Be sure to ask someone from that department.

For instance, if that employee regularly works in produce, the meat and dairy departments may have a different markdown schedule. Although they can help you with rain checks or price adjustments, these employees may not be aware of the time of day that markdowns are conducted in every department at their location.

This is especially true if the store is a large one. After you have the markdown schedule, try to plan your shopping trip as close to that time as you can. There are grocers in my area who simply do not do markdowns. At some stores, they select certain departments where they never mark down merchandise.

I choose to focus my attention on establishments where I have a greater possibility of saving money on the items that I want and need. By law, establishments cannot legally sell you an item which is past its expiration date — even if it is perfectly edible. Here are seven strategies that I use every week to make the most of my weekly grocery markdown hauls.

Before making a menu plan, it is vital that you begin with listing all fresh ingredients. In my case, this is the produce in my fridge and on my countertop. Before creating your menu plan , look at your list of ingredients and make a prioritized list of each ingredient according to when it needs to be used.

Items with a shorter shelf life, go at the top of the list. For instance, whole romaine lettuce will last longer than washed baby spinach or spring mix. In the same way, bananas will rot long before whole apples.

This prioritized list allows you to serve the freshest food and avoid throwing out food that has rotted. For instance, most recipes for portobello mushrooms involve removing the gills and stem. Rather than discard these, I chop them finely, add them to black beans, and create a batch of decadent portobello black bean burgers.

Vegetable scraps can be used to make vegetable broth. After making broth, some of the leftover scraps can be pulsed in the food processor and used in making garden herb crackers, fritters, biscuits, or for thickening soups.

Use your discretion with this. However, many other items can, indeed, be used one more time. Many plants will regrow when placed in water in a sunny place.

Alternately, you can also plant the root end in your garden for regrowth. For romaine lettuce, cut it down to about an inch of the bottom, stick this stem into a shallow bowl of water, and change the water once a day. It needs to get some sunlight. Yes, in the winter, a window will work.

When the leaves are a few inches long, harvest them and then, let it regrow again. This system works for about five times before the plant stops growing new leaves.

The final resting place for vegetable scraps which are truly not appropriate for any other use, is the compost pile. It is so easy to set aside a corner of your yard to compost food scraps and yard waste.

As it decomposes, it creates a nutrient rich soil for use in your yard and garden. Many varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs can be frozen for later use.
