You go to the store to stock up on fruits and vegetables, only to be halted by the high prices, especially on fresh produce. Stick to your produce plan by learning some tricks for buying produce for less.

I spoke with Craig Crosby of Sunmart Foods in North Dakota. He said that there are many ways to save money on produce, including watching for promotions like buy one, get one free, or getting free items with another purchase. Typically, items go on sale when they are most available, which leads me to the first and probably the most important tip on buying produce.

Pro tip : Save your vegetable scraps like carrot tops, onion trimmings and extra bits in a large Ziploc or container in the freezer. When the bag is full, use it to make homemade vegetable stock!

Cut your vegetables at home. Pre-cut produce costs more than whole vegetables. Purchase veggies whole, then take some time to prep them when you get home from the grocery store to make them easy to eat.

Avoid buying single servings. Purchasing many small packages of produce will add up to more than buying in larger amounts. Shop at discount grocery stores for good deals on fruits and vegetables, especially frozen and canned options.

Invest in dark leafy greens. Kale, Swiss chard, collard greens and spinach are so nutrient dense that they are worth including in your weekly shopping list.

And often over Christmas, boxes of oranges are a great price. In one area that we used to live in, I could get a 20 lb. box of fresh blueberries for considerably less than I would typically pay for fresh or even frozen blueberries! When it makes sense and is less expensive, buy the larger package.

When you find fresh produce on sale or seasonal produce for a great price, buy extra and preserve it by freezing it or canning it. Did you know that frozen fruits and vegetables are typically not only cheaper but also are just as nutritious?

In fact, many times they are actually more nutritious because they are harvested at the peak of ripeness. I like to buy frozen broccoli, cauliflower and green beans as well as various fruits.

I love using the fruit for my easy Frozen Fruit Smoothie! Those three-pound bags of onions never all weigh exactly 3 lbs. Several of these are important for specific groups or needs e.

Second, consumption of vegetables and fruits is associated with reduced risk of many chronic diseases. Specifically, consuming at least 2½ cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit per day is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke. Some vegetables and fruits may protect against certain types of cancer.

Third, most vegetables and fruits, when prepared without added fats or sugar, are relatively low in calories. Eating them instead of higher calorie foods can help adults and children achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Children tend to consume more than half of their fruit intake as juice.

Although percent fruit juice can be part of a healthful diet, it lacks dietary fiber and can contribute extra calories when consumed in excess. The majority of the recommended fruit should come from whole fruits, including fresh, canned, frozen, and dried forms, rather than from juice.

When juices are consumed, percent juice should be encouraged. To limit intake of added sugar, fruit canned in percent fruit juice is preferred over fruit canned in syrup.
