They can be a good way to introduce your family to healthier meals. Finally, meal kit services often feature large selections of meals from different types of cuisine.

They can add some much-needed variety if your dinners have been feeling stale. There are two different types of meal delivery services: prepared meal delivery and meal kit delivery. Prepared meal delivery services send single-serving meals that are completely cooked.

They only require reheating and they may be sent fresh or frozen. Meal kits, on the other hand, consist of weekly shipments of recipe cards and all the corresponding ingredients to cook those recipes. There are five main factors to consider when choosing the best affordable meal delivery service for your household.

For individuals, prepared meals may be more convenient, but meal kits are often a better choice for families. Families who follow specific diets like gluten-free, vegan or keto will need to choose meal delivery services like Purple Carrot or Green Chef, which are more expensive than some others.

Additionally, if you eat organic that will limit your options as well. Only Green Chef offers exclusively organic meal kits. Finally, you should review the menu before you sign up and make sure that there are plenty of options that you and the other members of your household will enjoy.

When choosing a meal delivery service, what to avoid really comes down to your personal preferences and budget. Fortunately, you can view the menu for all of these services on their websites before signing up. In fact, I have tested all of the services on this list for myself, in addition to several others.

We were able to use my first-hand experiences to help guide our decisions for the best cheap meal delivery. Additionally, we considered price per serving, specialty diets and customer reviews to ensure that we included highly-rated meal kits that offered affordable options for people with many different dietary needs and preferences.

Meal delivery services are weekly subscriptions that send pre-prepared meals or meal kits with recipes and ingredients to your door each week.

Some, like Nutrisystem, send monthly shipments. Meal delivery services are available at a wide range of prices. Many of them cost around eight to ten dollars per serving, but they can range from five to fifteen dollars per serving.

Meal delivery services can be a good fit for athletes, depending on their unique nutrition needs. Typically, athletes need to prioritize protein intake and may need to time their carbohydrate intake around athletic events.

Most meal delivery services feature protein-rich meal options and you can adjust the size of your carbohydrate serving if needed. Cheap meal delivery services can save your family hours each week. Although they are typically more expensive than grocery store prices, there are several affordable options that can save money compared to regular dining out.

Be sure to choose a meal kit that fits within your budget, is a good fit for your dietary needs and contains plenty of options that your household enjoys.

There are many options for types of food to choose from, and you can even order extra groceries that you might need as well. You do have to cook though, so if that's not interesting to you, this won't be the right plan. This feels less like a meal service and more like grocery shopping, according to GGR head of content and certified personal trainer Kate Meier, who tested out Hungryroot.

The ease of prep was fantastic for a meal kit service, according to Kate. But it was so easy—not a lot of chopping, because everything is prepackaged and ready to throw in a skillet. There is an abundance of variety with Hungryroot, particularly for those with dietary restrictions.

Also, Kate was a bit overwhelmed by the initial quiz at the start—asking lots of questions before you even get to see the meal options. Nevertheless, this is a solid service that provides high-quality ingredients for a relatively inexpensive price. Pricing typically goes down with the more servings and meals you order, which is why you will see a range for each service. Rated as our best overall cheap meal delivery kit, Dinnerly strikes the perfect balance of affordability and inventive, delicious meals.

The service keeps costs down by opting for digital recipe cards instead of paper and utilizing fewer ingredients per dish which means less chopping and cleaning for you.

How it works: You'll begin by building a box for two or four people and selecting from two to six meals per week.

You can opt to make the box vegetarian too. The menu is robust, allowing you to choose from over recipes each week that include family-friendly offerings, vegetarian and vegan fare, reduced-carb options and more.

Everything is designed to be prepared in 30 minutes or less with no more than six ingredients. Lab results: Our experts were very impressed with the variety and quantity of meals that Dinnerly offers, and they appreciate that the brand is able to remain affordable without sacrificing flavor or quality.

Testers were really impressed with the abundance of meals to choose from and just how tasty they were. But testers did note that some items came un-bagged in the box and that even though the recipes require only six fresh ingredients, you'll often need to work in a few basic additional items of your own.

That said, you can see in advance what ingredients they will send and what you'll need to have on hand. Many also noted that they would have preferred printed recipe cards, though Dinnerly does give you the option to print the recipe yourself at home.

You'll also find only basic nutrition information like calories and macronutrients on the recipes. The most inexpensive meal delivery kit out there, EveryPlate was launched by the popular HelloFresh a few years ago as a budget-friendly alternative.

The company is able to keep costs down by using less packaging and simple, accessible ingredients. How it works: Choose from either a two-person or four-person plan with three to six meals per week.

Lab results: Even though EveryPlate was the cheapest meal delivery kit we tested, both our experts and testers gave it top scores across the board. Although the offerings lean more toward the comfort-food side, our dietitians noted that it easy to find the nutrition facts for each meal readily available on the website.

More expensive services will package the food in individual bags or containers, but the food from EveryPlate doesn't come particularly well-organized in the box. This was one of the few complaints from testers, as some of the items were scattered around the box in transit.

Some testers also said that certain meals took longer to prepare than the time stated on the recipe cards. That being said, the meals are great value for the price, and testers loved how easy they were to prepare.

I also found the cooking instructions less complicated," a tester commented. Another said, "I like that EveryPlate has simple directions and comes with everything you need even stock packets to get your meal going.

This delivery service has been popular in the meal kit game since and focuses on easy-to-follow recipes. On its website, HelloFresh shares its own week price comparison study analyzing customers' costs versus the cost of shopping at nationwide grocery stores and found that HelloFresh is significantly cheaper than grocery shopping.

How it works: Choose a plan for two or four people and from two to six meals per week. Upgrades and add-ons are available as well, and there are over weekly menu options. Lab results: HelloFresh provides a solid meal delivery kit, with everything neatly packed into little bags with separators making the experience feel very organized and seamless.

The packaging in general also proved superior to other services we tested in terms of both performance and sustainability. Our experts like that full nutrition information and entire recipes are available on the site so you can get a preview before you commit to a particular meal. Allergens are listed per meal as well.

Testers appreciated the number of recipes, with one saying, "I liked that it seemed to have a lot of variety of meals to choose from. One tester said, "It allowed me to try new foods, minimize food waste and save time planning meals for the week. Rated as our best overall meal delivery kit , Blue Apron offers high-quality ingredients, inventive recipes and lots of options for different dietary needs, including WW.

How it works: Choose to feed two or four people, and select from two to four meals per week. Their signature chef's faves menu offers a mix of meat, fish and WW-recommended recipes; the vegetarian menu highlights meat-free dishes with seasonal produce and the wellness menu focuses on balanced meals approved by nutritionists and WW-recommended dishes.

Lab results: Everything in the kits came well packaged in little bags to keep things organized. Full nutrition facts labels are available on the site, along with the complete recipes and ingredient lists.

Our registered dietitians also loves the variety of WW-recommended meals for those trying to get creative in the kitchen and still manage their dietary goals. Both our pros and testers agree that the ingredients are fresh and high-quality, with testers giving the service rave reviews and noting that the recipes were creative and full of flavor.

The recipe cards offered simple step-by-step instructions, and the meals had substantial portions. The ingredients are perfectly measured, packaged well and fresh. Home Chef offers boxes that feed up to six people per meal , which is more than other services.

They provide plans that include both pre-portioned ingredients with easy-to-follow cooking instructions, as well as low- or no-prep meals for busy families. How it works: Users begin the process by taking an online quiz to determine which meal plan is the best for them, including answering questions on any dietary preferences and restrictions.

Lab results: Our experts love just how many different meal kit options Home Chef offers, whether you're looking to get something on the table fast for the family or want to indulge in a more special premium cooking experience.

And you don't have to order a crazy number of meals to unlock their lowest pricing. While it may not be the lowest-cost meal delivery kit on the list, it's definitely less than other big names out there, and the quality is top-notch.

You can check to see what items you'll need to have on hand for each meal and also get full nutrition facts readily available for every recipe on their website, but our registered dietitians do point out that the sodium content is very high on some of the meals. Great taste! I was very pleased," a tester said.

Another commented, "It's always hard to find new dinner ideas; these are a perfect variety to keep everyone in your family happy and full. Each stab in these sequences is unique and morphs into a different state with each step, creating captivating lead sounds that can take center stage in your productions.

Search for a restaurant deal. This code is invalid. You can also limit the quantity of the free items given out, creating urgency to take advantage of the offer before it runs out. Business card giveaways are an old strategy, but just like many of the strategies in this category, they remain effective today.

The process is simple: offer customers a chance to win a free meal in exchange for dropping their business card in a bowl. Make the prize a free meal for TWO and then advertise that you select a new card from the bowl every single week.

We want as many cards as possible because our modern twist takes advantage of every card we get. Family-sized meals have been a staple tool in the fast and fast-casual eatery toolbox for decades, but this concept remains underutilized elsewhere on the restaurant spectrum.

As we talked about earlier, people care a lot about the experience of eating out, and that experience is often deeply connected to the people they are eating out with. When a person sees a meal-for-two-offer, they think about sharing that meal with someone they know.

Offering shareable meals and preset, multi-course menus for specific group sizes is a great way to get people thinking about the experience they want to create and envisioning themselves having a great time with people they love at your restaurant.

Offering samples is a great way to drive sales. According to The Atlantic, free samples at stores like Costco can help boost sales considerably. If you have one or two dishes that always score big with customers, have a staff member outside the restaurant offering bite-sized samples to passersby.

If someone is in the mood for Indian food, they are usually going to choose their favorite Indian place. Your real competitors have the same or similar cuisine, the same or similar mood appeal, and the same or similar location. Local ingredients, foods, and craft drinks tend to be more expensive, but they also tend to be very well received by local customers.

Choosing local suppliers, loudly advertising that fact, and collaborating with them provides a great focal point for ongoing promotion. If you are already sourcing local ingredients, foods, or drinks, reach out to the supplier and invite them to collaborate.

Pro tip: it will be a lot easier to set something up if you have a clear game plan to propose from the beginning. In addition to non-competing restaurants, there are tons of non-competing local businesses in your area that would love to cross-promote with you in order to mutually grow both businesses.

One creative idea is to partner with businesses and organizations that need meeting space during your non-service or even low-service hours. This gets people in the door who will likely be interested in coming back later to try your food.

You could also arrange to serve food to the group as part of the agreement, either as a promotion or a paid service. The point here is to be conscious of your assets and how you can use those assets to grab attention to your core business. Despite all that focus on non-competing businesses, sometimes it even makes sense to partner with your direct competitors.

Restaurant Week and similar local events are a great time to put competition aside and celebrate all the restaurants in your local area. Restaurant Weeks are very popular and tend to get coverage from both social media and local media.

Hand out flyers, offer discounts, and encourage people to come in and try a dish made by the people in their own community. If your restaurant is a great place to work, the entire service staff network in your city, plus all their friends and family, is going to know about it.

Get your staff involved in providing ideas for improving the restaurant, and then use those ideas. Offer individual and team bonuses when possible. Be conscientious with scheduling and allow added flexibility for longtime performers.

If you want to really go above and beyond, find out what would be personally meaningful to your top staff and try to give them that as best you can.

Holidays can be a massive source of new business, but they also bring their fair share of competition. Every restaurant in your area is going to be running promotions and specials to compete for that holiday dining dash.

This is a day to pull out all the stops and celebrate someone incredibly important and special. You want to offer a great experience and charge a price that makes this an incredibly successful day for your restaurant.

This phrase is intentionally vague but entails a limitless supply of alcohol. Mimosas or wine are great options here, where you can supply a large amount of drinks at a relatively low budget. Instead of ignoring this or trying to fight it, why not profit from it? Create a ready-to-grill, take-home package that people can order to make their cookout easier AND higher quality at the same time.

You can even offer to grill it yourself for people who want the cookout experience without needing to do any work. The demographic for this celebration tends to skew a bit younger, however, and while diners are willing to spend money, cost is still a consideration.

A prix fixe menu is the perfect fit for this holiday. It lets your customers receive an upscale experience while also providing a fixed price they can commit to before arriving at your restaurant.

Offer upsells like wine pairing, main course upgrades, or special desserts to increase your average ticket size and make more money from the big spenders who visit your restaurant.

Reach out to as many as you can and find one that is interested in collaborating with you. Look for a mutually beneficial collaboration that is going to help both businesses grow together, and make sure both companies are contributing to the promotion and being featured in any advertising you both run for the event.

Customers love the convenience of simply showing up and experiencing the menu without needing to make wine decisions at each course. Start by choosing two or three signature dishes and then choose either one glass of wine or one bottle that best compliments the food.

For example, your menu might offer three glasses of champagne, as well as a description of what dish they go with and why they pair well together. Those who celebrate it tend to do so with the entire family, and you can encourage families with children to choose your restaurant on Easter by providing them with a special, kid-friendly menu that is intentional rather than an afterthought.

The key here is to go a step beyond the normal kids fair of chicken fingers, fries, burgers, and pizza. Offer something exceptional but still accessible to young kids and then advertise it heavily leading up to the event. This is an especially great promotion option for restaurants looking to attract families year-round.

Halloween is all about fun. Halloween events are more about decoration than anything else. You can do the same types of events you would do other times of the year, like trivia, karaoke, contests, and more — as long as you really put some effort into the décor.

You can also do stuff like menu item puns, random candies, fall-themed desserts, and so much more. If there is ever a holiday to just go nuts and have some fun, this is the one. The best way to tap into this demand is to roll out a little in-restaurant Irish pub of your own.

Thanksgiving is a celebration of gratitude, and for many, a time to think about those less fortunate. People want to give back, and you can help them do just that with a Buy-One-Give-One promotion. This is similar to a BOGO offer, but instead of providing customers with a free meal with each purchase, that purchase results in your restaurant donating a meal to those in need, usually through a partnership with a local charity.

Everybody likes gifts, especially around Christmas time. Offering a free gift during the month of December is a great way to tap into that Christmas energy.

You can offer a free appetizer. You can give away branded merchandise like Christmas-tree ornaments or cheap t-shirts. Or you can do something really simple like giving away a free item or two along with a connected purchase. The idea here is to offer something low-cost to everyone.

You can run a single-winner giveaway with a more noteworthy price any time. For Christmas, you want it to feel more like a gift than sweepstakes. One of the best ways to create regulars is to have a weekly special they love, look forward to, and show up for week in and week out.

Prizes can include anything from free drinks to gift cards to branded t-shirts or whatever you have available. The night can also be enhanced with other types of games or anything that creates a game-like or carnival-like atmosphere.

When you offer freebies as a one-off promotion to get people in the door, you are planning to recoup that cost through repeat orders at full price or at a minor discount where you are still bringing in a profit. You want to be strategic about the loss leader item and make sure it depends on additional orders to be enjoyed.

Craft beer is appreciated by a wide variety of people and can be paired with a wide variety of foods, making for a fun and interesting weekly experience. To make your beer night special, choose a different selection of beers each week and include a description of why you chose it.

Another great addition is to provide branded mugs or glasses customers can order. Challenges that are nearly impossible are more spectacular and more likely to grab viral attention. Pair these with a notable prize. Challenges that are accessible are more fun and more likely to create regulars.

Offer smaller prizes most people are capable of winning. Live entertainment can take many different forms. The key here is to measure performance and either tie entertainer compensation to sales or make sure the bump in customers is justifying the expense.

Trivia night combines a lot of what people like about game nights with what they love about live entertainment. Trivia nights are great at pulling in regulars and can often appeal to a higher spending crowd than other types of activities.

Some ideas to make these nights extra special include doing rotating themes, offering food and drink prizes for winners and runners up, and offering small discounts to all active participants.

Remember to use these nights to promote new menu items, specials occurring on other days, and anything else that could use some extra eyeballs. Given these nights are often presold and can be created in bulk, you are typically able to offer these at a compelling price point, further increasing the draw and encouraging customers to come back on a regular basis.

This type of weekly special is also a great opportunity to bring in guest chefs offering unique menus. The more variety you can provide from week to week, the more likely you are to get regulars.

Designating a weekly night where a percentage of profits go to a specific charity allows you to attract customers, give back to your community, and support great causes at the same time.

While this will likely work better as a monthly event for some restaurants, depending on your location and clientele, this could make for the perfect weekly event.

You might even consider trying a hybrid class, where you combine a light cooking lesson with a more typical dining experience, giving patrons the best of both worlds. Maybe even pair it with a more standard promotion offer.

BOGO offers are generally perceived as a better offer than a percentage discount or even a free appetizer, so assuming you only offer this deal on Customer Appreciation Night, it will end up feeling like… actual customer appreciation.

Regulars are the backbone of your business. The trick with creating a great loyalty program is to find something that coaxes more people from occasional purchases to frequent purchases without losing all your margins along the way. We want to get people in the club as quickly and easily as possible, and then make them reach for the biggest rewards.

A great way to do this is to use email or text signup as your entry point to the membership. Take promotional events you would otherwise simply offer the general public and make them member-only, BUT all people need to do to become a member is simply signup via their email or phone number.

You can apply this concept to the rest of the ideas in this category and really any of the ideas in this guide. Consider which promotions to run for all customers and which to attach to membership, motivating more people to sign up. The power of a point system is in its simplicity.

A lot of restaurants using a point system forget to tell their customers exactly how it works or help them track their points, which ultimately defeats the purpose of having the system in the first place.

We have a point-based system built directly into our Owner. com platform, and it will automatically send out emails just like this to your customers after each purchase.

We want to incentivize our most frequent patrons to spread the word about our restaurant and even bring people in with them. If you are using a point system, set it up so successful referrals result in a big point bonus you email the customer about and make a point of celebrating.

We want to make that experience feel really great. We want to motivate that patron to continue referring people to our restaurant. If you are offering any sort of the exclusive VIP rewards we talk about elsewhere on this list, make referrals a key entry point to the top rewards.

People love getting a behind-the-scenes look at the places they frequent, and restaurants are no exception. This is especially true for foodies, who already love learning about the origins of different foods, as well as how to prepare them.

A great way to reward your loyal patrons and engage your local foodie community is to host recurring Behind-the-Scenes Tour nights, where you can introduce customers to your history, tell them how you prepare some of your most popular dishes, and give them an idea of what it takes to run your restaurant on a daily basis.

If you have an open kitchen, let people watch from nearby tables so they can see their meals being prepared. This is also the perfect promotional opportunity for cross-promoting with other businesses looking to get their names out there, like local farmers or specialty goods producers you partner with.

Consider inviting these partners along on your tour nights so customers can learn more about their offerings as well. Rotating local partners into the event will also keep it interesting for customers who want to return multiple times.

Having your customers tag you on social media while visiting your restaurant is a great way to get exposure to new customers. A few times a week, randomly pick a customer who has tagged you and surprise their table with free drinks or a free dessert.

Either way, this is a great strategy to get exposure to new customers AND create loyal customers who are eager to return to your restaurant again. This one is less about an offer you run and more about how you present your brand.

You can also take photos of your customers and add them to the walls. This sort of deeper engagement is an important part of creating real loyalty from your customers that goes beyond the food they are purchasing.

Just like a popup allows you to experiment with creating a new experience, you can achieve something similar while also building customer loyalty by holding exclusive dining events for members. The goal here is to create special, exclusive experiences people rave about and look forward to attending.

If you have a smaller customer base, try what we talked about earlier and attach these events to the lowest membership tier, where anyone who signs up via email or phone number can join the fun. Quarterly or bi-yearly events are the perfect VIP bonus for outstanding patrons.

And I can promise you they would LOVE to weigh-in and have some influence on the direction of that menu. Providing opportunities for customers to interact with and influence your business is both a great promotion tool and a great way to build loyalty.

If you already use limited-run menu items as a promotion tool — which I highly recommend — this becomes really easy and even systematic. You can periodically take previously run items and invite your customers to vote on what to bring back. Attach this to the entry level of your loyalty program to motivate more people to signup, but only if you are doing it periodically.

It might even be somethin retro like fondue. Then you can put a poll on social media and ask your customers to vote for their favorite dish from yesteryear.

This is a great way to get some online word-of-mouth marketing, and customers will feel more emotionally connected to your business after having the chance to influence a real, tangible decision you make for the restaurant. The vast majority of promotions you will run depend on the customer expecting them.

The promotion only works when you create the expectation to then motivate an action by the customer. This was the original reason we built Owner. com, which allows restaurants to do commission-free deliveries through their website, while still using 3rd party driver networks.

But whether you are using Owner. com or have set up direct-orders on your website via another method, getting people to actually use your website instead of the third party apps can be tricky.

When a new restaurant partner starts with us, we design and print out 1, fliers for them to package in deliveries prepared for 3rd party app orders. These fliers offer a discount to the recipient that can only be redeemed via the direct-order system.

This is how we consistently turn 3rd-party app users into loyal, commission-free customers for our restaurant partners. Adam Guild is the CEO of Owner, a restaurant marketing platform that makes online growth easy for restaurants.

We've carefully evaluated each company on various criteria, such as pricing, meal variety, packaging, cooking time, and more. To ensure we provide the best recommendations to our readers, we've tested and tasted over 1, meals and counting!

Our testers begin by creating an account with the service and exploring the website to assess its user-friendliness. They then select a diverse range of meals that represent a variety of dietary preferences and make a purchase. Upon delivery, our testers meticulously document the unboxing process by conducting a packaging count and taking photos.

Next, our testers follow each recipe's directions and photograph the cooking process as they chop, slice, and sauté. They keep track of the time spent preparing and cooking the dish to see how these recipes stack up against their expected preparation and cooking times.

Finally, we document the best part—the food! Our testers are encouraged to assemble a tasting panel of family and friends to try the meals and make note of details such as texture, seasoning levels, and presentation. While we know taste is subjective, we collect feedback from the panel and present those notes to our readers to help them make an informed decision when choosing a meal delivery service.

Low-cost Jam Discounts

Low-cost Jam Discounts

We combine semi-ripe mangos, fresh lime juice and just a touch of sugar making it perfectly tangy. It is super thick and chunky. While not too many people have had mango jam and this is not as popular as more traditional flavors, this is some of our customers' favorite jam, and you should give it a try!

We make this classic, traditional, yummy ketchup from California-grown tomatoes. Unlike other brands that use genetically modified tomatoes ours are GMO free and full of flavor.

And unlike those big brands that use high fructose corn syrup we use cane sugar which makes a world of a difference in taste. Cider vinegar, over white vinegar, gives it a nice fruity flavor.

We call this our San Francisco style ketchup because this city is famous for food and our ketchup lives up the the reputation. We spent many years tasting different brands of ketchup to get this just right.

Over the years we have modified it and discovered most ketchup brands use highly concentrated tomato paste which can have an almost sour taste, requiring lots of sugar. We use pureed tomatoes and the advantage is a more fresh tomato flavor and not having to add as much sugar.

We have customers who are ketchup addicts tell us it is the best they ever tried. One customer who is from Pittsburgh, PA, the birthplace of Heinz, and where everyone puts ketchup on everything, said it just blew his mind. We hate to say it, but this is how ketchup is supposed to taste.

After many years I have created a new bbq sauce. This is based on my love for Okonomiyaki sauce - a sweet, tangy, savory, and not spicy sauce popular in Japan.

The advantage of this sauce is unlike western style bbq sauces that have heat in then, this doesn't so it can pair well with many more foods and you can have it for breakfast on eggs - my favorite!.

However, it has similar ingredients and I think with my own interpretation we can call it a BBQ sauce. This is great for grilling, or just dousing on any type of meat or veggies.

Because it is so delicious and pairs so well, I call it everything sauce. It does have Worcestershire sauce in it, a key ingredient in Okonomiyaki and gives this sauce a very unique taste - so if you have fish allergies anchovies you cannot eat it. Buy some now: sold out. We use it in sandwiches, as a dip for fries and roasted potatoes, on burgers and hot dogs.

You can even make meat loaf with it. One dish we love to make is pulled bbq chicken or turkey sandwichs with coleslaw as they do in North Carolina - search online lots of recipes! If you are vegetarian, it is perfect seasoning for a wide variety of dishes. Just be creative! It is delicious all year round.

Not too spicy, but not too mild. It is a perfect combination of spices, heat, sweetness and tang. The complex, addictive flavor is due to our use of more than seven types of chilies and peppers, and many, many spices.

Just measuring out all the ingredients takes an hour! Our bbq sauce is gluten free and contains California grown GMO-free tomatoes. It does contain soy since gluten free soy sauce is one of the ingredients. Buy some now:. Bbq sauce is something sublime when you find one this good.

My bbq sauce obsession started around when I lived down the street from a bbq joint on Divisadero street in San Francisco called Brother in Laws. Their bbq sauce was so delicious I just craved it all the time.

Their peach cobbler was also outstanding. Boy was that a bargain! I ate there once a week for many years until the owner sold the business to one of his employees who had the nerve to change the receipe for the sauce and I never went back.

Still to this day I can taste that sauce in my mind, and guess what? I still cannot recreate it. I guess memories of delicious things from our past just cannot be topped. So this sauce is my attempt to make my own addictive sauce, and guess what? I am addicted to it! This fantastic bbq sauce is so delicious you can eat it straight out of the jar with a spoon.

No kidding. It is based around molasses, dark cane sugar, a good amount of cider vinegar for tang and the addition of bourbon, espresso, fresh apple cider, our famous ketchup and a variety of spices and peppers.

One of the spices is a five spice blend, which gives it just the faintest anise flavor from the fennel and star anise. It has more heat to it than our other bbq sauce.

When I am too tired to cook, I will grab a rotisserie chicken at the supermarket and just dip the meat into this sauce. No matter how much sauce I pour on the plate, it is never enough. This is our special summer Blenheim apricot jam. Unlike the standard Blenheim apricot below, that uses field run apricots a mix of ripe, semi-ripe and green fruit the special apricot we make in a very small amount using only ripe fruit we hand select.

Eric above is picking out apricots for this jam at the farm. The difference in flavor is more intense.

Due to the fragile nature of ripe Blenehims that need to be processed very quickly, we can only make a small amount these days due to high demands in the summer for all our other products. We were lucky to get priority and get enough fruit to meet customer demand.

This is a very special offering so stock up! In order to maximize the fruit and make enough, we didn't cook the jam as long as usual to thicken it. It is more runny. But you can thicken it quickly by dumping it in a small sauce pan, boiling about 30 seconds and then dumping back in the jar if you want.

After apricot season, it is plum season and the Mariposa plums are some of our favorite. A delicious plum with a uniquely delicate perfumy, floral flavor that lingers.

The Mariposa, thanks to us, has been added to Slow Food USA's Ark of Taste - a list of endangered crops or food practices. We are proud to be the first company to make jam from this variety of plum. Like all our jams, pectin is never added and we make it by hand each July from fresh fruit from Blossom Bluff Orchards in Parlier, California.

Eric has two favorite flavors of jam - the mariposa and the limequat. You absolutely must try this on a croissant or brioche! Also great used in a plum chocolate cookie recipe. Elephant Heart plums are very hard to find. Few people grow them since they are a difficult and unpredictable crop.

But the intense, tart almost spicy flavor is among the finest of all plums. When cooked into jam or baked in desserts the flavor is amazing.

These plums are also on Slow Food USA's Ark of Taste - a list of endangered crops or food practices. Some others now do, but none as delicious as ours. We make this from fresh fruit sourced from Blossom Bluff Orchards in Parlier, CA and only limited amounts are made since we are usually too tired from making the Blenheim apricot and Mariposa plum jams to make any more.

Note, the dried elephant heart plums that Blossom Bluff sells are out of this world! Visit their site and order some! You can make delicious plum chocolate Danish cookies with this jam.

This jam is made from the high acid variety nectarine called Red Flame. It is low in sugar and a favorite among our customers. Back in , almost a year ago today, while staying overnight in Grasse, France, we had the most amazing dinner at a tiny four-table restaurant on the edge of town, where the owner was the cook and waitress.

For dessert I had a white peach sorbet that blew my mind and it was that stone fruit creation that was the inspiration for our apricot jam that we made for the first time a month later after we returned to the U. In all the years of owning this company I never paid tribute to this until now.

Well, white stone fruits when cooked have a sort of pale color which isn't as beautiful as cooked darker colored fruit. But I have decided who cares about the color, because it is the flavor that counts here, and so with a big drum roll I present our ode to Grasse and that wonderful restaurant and the sorbet.

This time I am using a viking pearl white nectarine, because I am more partial to nectarines than peaches, so while not exactly the same, in jam form it will be better because nectarines are a bit more tangy. Very limited quantities! Four super special, super low production summer jams.

The Red Flame nectarine is super tangy and delicious, being a high acid variety. Special Blenheim apricot jam is the last of the seaon and considering it was crop failure this year, we are one of the few places you can get this - if anywhere.

Mariposa plum is a Luther Burbank variety of plum on the Slow Food Ark of Taste list. Absolutely the best plum ever. Mara des Bois means wild strawberry and while these technically aren't growing in the woods, the are a very special small French variety packed with flavor.

Super strawberry flavor! Box contains Red Flame Nectarine, Mariposa Plum, Special Blenheim apricot, Mara des Bois strawberry. Our Taste of Fall two pack gift box includes a jar of rare pumpkin blossom honey and a jar of quince jam or membrillo.

Perfect for the food connoisseur in your life, or just for yourself! We make a small amount of the popular jam in September. This is a thick delicious jam and something that will warm you with the approach of fall and cool weather.

This is a brand new creation and it is delicious!!! Red gooseberries are a tart anti-oxidant rich berry. Quince are a very floral almost rose tasting relative of apples and pears. By combining the gooseberries with quince jelly you get the most tantalizing flavor - sort of like a tart strawberry.

We only are making a small amount so it will sell out quickly. Totaly unique!! About 20 years ago I was in San Francisco's Chinatown for dim sum and was walking through a small square with a bunch of booths set up. It was there that I discovered a woman who was a commercial bee keeper and was selling blackberry blossom honey.

The flavor really was incredible, and the jar I bought from her I savored like it was the last one on earth. When I started welovejam, I tracked her down and we were going to sell her honey but for whatever reason we never did and I lost her contact information.

Fast forward nearly 12 years and we are proud to offer this incredible honey from another bee keeper from Washington State, who also collects the honey from black berry crops, just as she did. What can I say about this honey? First off, it is truely unique, the scent when you open the jar is distinctively floral, and while it is scientifically impossible for the honey to taste like blackberries, it does.

Any honey lover has to have this honey, for it is one of a kind and simply delicious. I just eat a spoonfuit for maximum flavor, but adding it to yoghurt, oatmeal, baking with it etc.

still does not dilute its special flavor. This amazing quince jelly is made after we make the quince jam. It is very tricky to make since there is no added pectin, and the pectin levels of the fruit and how we cook it varies a little each year, making some years a success and some a dud.

Luckily this year we nailed it and boy o boy is this a winner. It has less sugar than we normally use, so I have to make detailed notes for next year how I did this differently. Not familiar with quince? Never had it? All I can say is this offshoot from the pear and apple family, and a very ancient fruit some say it wasn't an apple in the garden of eden but a quince has the most intriguing, delicious, fruity flavor you ever put in your mouth.

It is far more concentrated in flavor than the quince jam. Find coupons and earn cashback at over 2, stores worldwide when you shop at Best of Discount! Save with deals and discounts! Think about what you spend the most on and prioritize finding the best price for those items. The next step is to follow that quintessential shopping advice: Don't go to the grocery store hungry. You're much more likely to make impulse and unhealthy purchases if you do, so shop after a meal or grab a healthy snack before heading to the store.

And remember: The cheapest groceries are not always the most nutritious; consider spending slightly more for foods that are filling and nutrient-dense. For tips and recommendations for a more economical shopping experience, see below for advice from the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab.

Fruit and vegetables are among the groceries with the largest price jumps lately , but you can still find affordable produce by buying seasonally. Purchasing when produce is abundant helps lower the cost and will all but assure the best taste and highest levels of nutrition.

Seasonal Fruits. Seasonal Vegetables. Another way to save money on produce is to opt for fruit and vegetables that have a longer shelf-life.

For example, to help extend your grocery dollars, choose apples over berries or carrots or celery over leafy greens. Generally, some of the cheapest fruit and vegetables year-round tend to be bananas, apples, oranges, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and sweet potatoes.

Meat can be the most expensive category for most food budgets, and can account for a large portion of the overall grocery bill. To save money, opt for the ground variety of your favorite protein.

Ground beef, chicken or turkey are super versatile, easily frozen and can be used in many different recipes.

Larger cuts of meat will usually cost less per pound, but they may require marinating, braising and slow cooking to bring out the tenderness.

If you do prefer to include cheaper cuts of meat, consider including:. Buying a whole chicken instead of pre-portioned cuts can also save money and the leftovers, including the bones, are great for making chicken soup or bone broth. Consider cutting costs even further by implementing Meatless Monday or meatless dinners a few nights a week.

Swap out meat for healthy plant-based meat alternatives such as tofu, tempeh, beans and legumes, as your protein source. The cost of fresh seafood may also vary seasonally. According to the Seafood Nutrition Partnership , fresh Alaskan salmon is less expensive during the summer when the fish are more abundant.

Other popular choices that may be worth buying seasonally include Albacore tuna in season July-October and halibut in season March-November.

Other ways to save money on seafood:. Whether you prefer dairy or non-dairy, you can find competitive prices due to the sheer number of products on the market. While non-dairy milks may be more expensive than dairy, some non-dairy brands offer shelf stable options that can be bought in bulk when they're on sale.

Just note that many dairy and non- dairy milks and yogurts contain added sugars and sometimes saturated fats. Always check the label before purchasing. More ways to save:. When it comes to cheap groceries, pantry staples are the big winners. This category includes dry and canned goods such as flour, oatmeal, chicken stock, nuts, nut butters and seeds.

Among the cheapest staples are dried and canned beans — they're also easy to prepare and provide a great source of plant-based protein and fiber, two very important nutrients that are often only available in more costly foods. Grains like brown rice and oatmeal also score high in cost-effectiveness and nutrition.

Frozen foods can be stored in your freezer for months. Again, consider buying in bulk when frozen products are on sale.

Items worth stocking up on include:. Note that prices may vary in AK and HI. This offer is valid through February 16th and can only be redeemed on orders placed online. Your offer will be valid for two weeks.

Three different companies, three different approaches, same impressive results. Katherine Martinko is an expert in sustainable living. She holds a degree in English Literature and History from the University of Toronto.

Whenever an eco-friendly cleaning company asks to send me samples, I jump at the opportunity—as long as I like what I see on their website in terms of ingredients, packaging, and philosophy.

It's hard to find innovate green products where I live in rural Ontario, Canada, so I gladly accept whatever these companies want to send my way. I give their products an honest review.

I use every single item in its entirety, usually during my Saturday morning house-cleaning sessions. My husband, who's the bathroom cleaning expert, has plenty of feedback on the various cleaners as well.

Some impressed us more than others. What follows is the list of products we liked the best over the past year—just in time for your spring cleaning. I love the fact that the entire company revolves around a single bottle of concentrated formula It works better than any green product I've used before, leaving sinks and counters sparkling clean, and it smells heavenly.

I attended an info session hosted by Branch Basics ' founders in March They emphasized the need to rethink our definition of "clean" and to move away from the powerful yet harmful substances that are often used to scour our homes. Replacing synthetic chemicals with effective natural ones is a simple way to improve air quality in the home, and to reduce the number of plastic bottles required to do the same job.

On a side note, the founders explained that soap is different from a disinfectant in that it removes germs, rather than kills them, making it more beneficial and effective. Soap dismantles the pathogen, breaks down the fatty lipid layer, and makes it inactive, whereas a disinfectant usually needs a "dwell time" of between 30 seconds and 10 minutes to kill germs.

Even then, it might miss some. That's why if you're concerned about sanitizing, you should clean with soap first before spraying with disinfectant.

This company has been around for a long time and I am consistently impressed by the simplicity yet cleverness of its product line. I've been using its laundry detergent and oxygen booster for months and my family's often-very-dirty clothes are spotless.

The Gentle Home Cleaning Scrub works wonders on our grimy white porcelain sinks. Guests had lots of questions about the bar of Plastic-Free Dish Soap that sat on the edge of the kitchen sink for months, handy for swiping with a cleaning sponge.

Meliora makes all of its products in a factory on Chicago's West Side and promises that they will meet three basic requirements—they'll work to get your house clean, they're people-friendly, and they're planet-friendly. It has a clear chemical use policy on the website that promises each ingredient is certified by MADE SAFE and Leaping Bunny.

Many of the ingredients are also organic. Everything comes in paper bags or cartons. The laundry and oxygen booster canisters were recently redesigned to be entirely made of paper, as opposed to cardboard canisters with metal caps that had to be pulled off for recycling.

I'd read and written about Cleancult before, but hadn't tried it myself until I got a box of colorful cartons delivered to my door. I've never seen such a pretty array of cleaning products! They come packaged in what are essentially milk cartons to refill glass bottles, also sold by the company, but you'd never mistake them for milk with the colorful graphics.

These cartons are recyclable in many parts of the U. not where I live in Canada , though you can also ship them back to the company for recycling.

I've been using the all-purpose cleaner, hand soap, and bar soaps. The all-purpose cleaner is great. It cuts through the scum on my bathtub, sinks, and counters without any trouble. My husband raves about the bar soap, says it's the nicest we've ever had in the shower.

He left the paper wrapping out so we wouldn't forget to order more. Guests have asked about the lavender-scented hand soap in our downstairs bathroom. I don't usually use liquid hand soap, but I have to admit it's a nice touch and it smells great. For example, kitchen counters and sinks should be washed with a mild detergent mixed with hot water.

Keep bleach solution on surface for one minute, and then rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry. Contact us Chat with us. Green or Natural Cleaners Are the cleaning products you use safer for the environment?

Other Cleaning Options For many cleaning tasks around the home, you can use products that you might already have on hand: A vinegar and water solution can be used to clean and freshen many surfaces around the home, including walls and cupboards. It also works well to clean windows.

Baking soda can also be used to adsorb odors around the home, including in refrigerators and closets. Lemon juice can be used to help dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits. Cornstarch as well as baking soda can be used to help deodorize rugs and carpets. Sprinkle about 1 cup per room, then vacuum after 30 minutes.

Instead, as we were looking at pricy accommodation in the U. we figured it would be a good time to pay for Iceland instead and we were so pleased with our decision.

We were really worried about getting a plane for the first time but due to the lack of travellers the flight was only a third full.

On arrival we had Iceland pretty much to ourselves and only saw people really as we reached the Golden Circle and Reykjavík and on a boat trip at Jokulsarlon. When we travelled there was mandatory covid testing on arrival and up to 24 hours of quarantine until you got the results at an approved hotel.

This is what made the decision for us on which direction to travel the ring road but of course you can do the whole thing in reverse. We hired a car through Lava, found through Northbound recommended by Chelsea Cheap Holiday Expert in her blog.

We had emailed the hotel in advance and requested early check in due to our early flight and to check whether they had gluten free options as we booked it solely based on being the only hotel in the area approved for quarantine.

We ended up not needing the early check in arriving about pm and they did cater for gluten free so it suited our needs. The hotel was Hotel Laugarbakki which looked really bleak from the outside and we were initially worried! Inside though it was nice, modern and clean with a comfy bed and it cost £ for the night.

The menu was pretty small and made up of Icelandic dishes, some of which were naturally gluten free. Paul had a lamb dish whilst I played it as safe as I could with the cod and mash. The cod was large with a nice buttery sauce and a pop of flavour from some capers.

The main issue was the texture, it was all a bit slimy! We skipped the icecream based desserts in favour of hot chocolate and biscuits in the room that we had with us. So much of my trip planning and travel is based around food, and most travel guides I write are based around restaurants and amazing gluten free finds.

However, driving around Iceland is very much about the road trip and scenery. Restaurants and food were based around what was convenient for the itinerary and I have written this post based on our travel and what we did and how we managed finding gluten free options rather than them being the focus.

Day two started with a hotel breakfast and I was pleasantly surprised by a gluten free tray of items that they brought out for me even if it was just cereal, crisp bread and jam to supplement the skyr and fresh produce it still helps and shows understanding by having the jam stored away safely.

From the hotel in Hvammstangir we drove the two hour drive around the Vatnses peninsula. After the Peninsula, we rejoined the ring road briefly before stopping for the first waterfall of the trip, Kolugljufur. We then stayed on the ring road until turning left at road 75 to take us to the coast and Vesturosinn.

The black sand beach with a mountain backdrop and blue skies was absolutely picture perfect, and we had it all to ourselves. We then made a last minute decision to drive the Trollaskagi Peninsula and carried on round to the pretty town Siglufjordur.

I highly recommend this stunning drive off the ring road if you have time! This was the first supermarket we came across driving anti clockwise around the ring road and after the quarantine period.

Siglufjordur was beautiful, and we absolutely loved this day of road tripping and the feeling of freedom after lockdowns! Gluten free fish and chips was definitely one of my most exciting finds in Iceland. Everything can be made gluten free, and the fish and chicken are gluten free as standard but not advertised to put normal people off.

He was wheat intolerant which he said was tricky with gluten free wheat starch being used now in gluten free products and said his ex was extremely intolerant to gluten so he seemed to know his stuff. I ate there with no ill effects whilst chatting about being gluten free pretty much the entire time that the food was being cooked.

The fish rather than being battered was in a seasoned crumb and it was really good, which I had with chips and tomato ketchup. I would never have tried to eat here myself, and there were no signs or boards or anything really advertising the food. We ate the food about pm before having a wander around the town and visiting the small botanical gardens that were open until 10pm.

Hotel: The Centrum Hotel. We stayed at The Centrum Hotel for £90 and it was more on the Travelodge end of the scale of double rooms but a hostel kind of set up with a basic shared kitchen if you wanted to cook. We loved day three in Iceland driving the Diamond Circle in the North of the country.

Our first stop of the day after some cereal on the go, was Godafoss arriving about am where we walked both sides of the beautiful falls. Our second stop of the day was Husavik where we made a quick stop in Netto. A larger supermarket than Kjordburdin that had a larger gluten free section as well as a good range of dairy free milk and cheese the gluten free and dairy free items were very pricy though and I was glad to have brought bread from home.

We bought sandwich fillings, gluteney bread, snacks and skyr. Husavik is the home of whale watching in Iceland. Definitely book if you want to do this! We were there just after 10am and the whale watching and puffin tour was fully booked despite the low number of tourists.

You will also need to factor in 4 hours for the tour or 2. After Asbyrgi we had a picnic lunch, where I ate my favourite travel product — Genius pitta breads with some locally bought cream cheese.

However the largest waterfall in Europe by volume of water is an impressive sight! From Selfoss we headed to Hverir geothermal spot which is just outside Lake Myvatn where we stayed overnight for our third night in Iceland. We just visited the restaurant as they said they could cater for me and most of the menu was naturally gluten free.

For the main I had the lamb with garlic butter and wedges and it was amazing! Everything is locally produced, and there are cows behind you in the restaurant!

Service here though was really slow, and the new waiter tried to offer me the vegan burger. Luckily there were other staff around to help explain the menu — hopefully the service will improve as the new staff settle in!

After dinner we headed to the Myvatn Nature Baths, a smaller version of the Blue Lagoon and we loved it. It cost us £45 pp £10 of which was for a dressing gown upgrade.

Hotel — Iceland Air. In Lake Myvatn we stayed at Iceland Air Hotel and we really enjoyed the stay. It was funky and comfortable, and the room cost £ so not a cheap rate for room only. We picked up some coffee, apple juice, skyr, fruit and a pastry for Paul on top of our cereal and started the day with some of Lake Myvatns sights.

We briefly visited Grjotagja thermal caves ; Dimmuborgir lava fields and Skutustadagrig pseudo craters. Note: There were restrooms at Dimmuborgir for kr use. We made them quick stops due to time, but add in an an extra night in Lake Myvatn for more activities, downtime or for hiking in this area if you have the time to.

We instead started the long — and snowy — drive to the south. Road tripping in Iceland sees the weather changing constantly, and why you need to allow some extra time to what Google maps shows for journeys!

Visibility was pretty low at some points of this day, but it did clear up as we got to the stunning scenery at the coast. We stopped at N1 service station in Egilsstadir for petrol and I found some sweets actually labelled gluten free you have no idea how many sweets and chocolate I scanned on Google translate that were coming up as may contain so these were a more exciting find in Iceland than they would have been in the U.

If you like sweets on a road trip I would recommend packing a couple of bags to bring with you! At Egilsstadir we ate our packed lunch, before turning off the main road to detour to Seydisfjordur, passing waterfalls on the way — we passed many over the two days travelling to the South.

We stopped at Folaldafoss just off the main road but skipped another waterfall as it was a walk to get to it and the rain was pretty much sideways by this point.

We visited Seydisfjordur, one of the most instagrammable spots in Iceland! In reality this meant me taking selfies in the rain whilst Paul went to buy additional hot drinks our Chillys bottles for hot drinks were one of the best things we packed for Iceland as he refused to take photos of a rainbow road in the rain.

The weather was so miserable at this point that we just drove around the town before heading back to the ring road!

We spent our fourth night just outside Djupivogur, staying in a small one bedroom chalet type accommodation which were basic but these were perfect for us as they had a kitchen so we could cook a couple of meals ourselves.

We chose to cook unless we were in the bigger cities or near a highly recommended gluten free location — both a cheaper and less stressful option of constantly having to find gluten free food.

This room cost £ for a night on hotels. com, but we saved money from not eating out and they have great views! If I know I am going to be self catering at any point in a trip I pack Morrisons Dino pasta to take with me from the U.

as they are g bags and I find Schwartz mixes really useful for these scenarios as it means you have everything you need.

If not though I carry very small cosmetic sample pots filled with a few basic spices. By having pasta and a spaghetti bolognaise mix I only had to find and pay Icelandic prices for the fresh ingredients and vegetables.

We instead headed there to see the sights and to grab a coffee in the morning. Â Even if you just eat vegetarian for a few days a week you should see some cost savings. Â Be adventurous and explore some new recipes and you might just surprise yourself. I should caveat this by saying that soy and rice based dairy products are usually more expensive than cow based.

We still eat cow cheese and sour cream, but we have greatly reduce the amount of these foods in our diet. Over time our taste buds have adjusted and we find it easier to use smaller amounts. After reading the first post you should have a good idea of what you will be eating for each meal this first week.

The next step is to make your grocery list. I usually use PRODUCE, FROZEN, DAIRY, MEAT, CANNED GOODS, DRY GOODS, and HOUSEHOLD. Now, go through the list of your meals and write down each ingredient that you need to buy.

Remember, on this first shopping trip the goal is to read as few labels as possible. If they are not and they contain any processed products I would strongly recommend that you change your menu to not include these foods.

If there are some essentials that you need to replace — like mayo, ketchup, etc. Wheat is so ubiquitous in the Standard American Diet that we often forget that we are eating it. Here are a few foods that you may not realize contain wheat.

The best tips that I can give you for the grocery store are to stick to the outside aisles and whole, unprocessed foods. Follow your grocery list and look forward to feeling better during the coming week. Also check to see if you they have a special location for gluten free foods, or if they shelve them near their gluten-filled counterparts.

But I really do want you to feel better quickly, and the easiest way to accomplish that is to get ALL of the gluten out of your diet. In this last post, Heather gives us a peak into her pantry.

PBJ sandwiches for rest of family, 5-bean casserole, baked beans, macaroni salad with Tinkyada pasta , leftovers. Â Here are some of the sites where I shop, as well as a few that other readers have recommended:. They are also helpful when you are planning meals.
